New Frontiers chamber music concert with the Chinook Winds

The Chinook Winds will present New Frontiers performances as part of the Great Falls Symphony’s Chamber Music Series on Sunday, November 11, 2pm at First Congregational Church UCC and Tuesday, November 13, 7pm at Trinitas Chapel, University of Providence. Single admission is $15 for adults and $5 for students. Family passes are $15 and include admission for one student and one adult. Bring-a-friend packages are available online only at gfsymphony.org and include two adult admissions for $25. Four-ticket passes are available for $45 (adults) and $16 (students). Season passes grant seven admissions and may be purchased for $75 (adults) and $25 (students). Chinook Winds begins its season by featuring three premiers by composers Eason, Steinmetz, and Halgrimsson. “We are excited to present another of Adam Eason's quirky, enjoyable new works for woodwind quintet,” says Lauren Blackerby, oboe. This follows our premiere of his Measuring Cups Etudes last year, which quickly became an audience favorite. Eason puts his own creative spin on the traditional quintet form, playing with elements from classical quintet repertoire. One could say that the piece sounds like the love affair between a classical Reicha woodwind quintet... and a video game. Next on the program, the Chinook Winds will perform What’s Going On, by John Steinmetz. This composition is the product of a collaborative project which the quintet was involved in, led by the Phoenix based wind quintet, Mill Ave Chamber Players. We end this program with possibly our most adventurous and challenging repertoire yet: Intarsia by Icelandic composer Hafliði Halgrimsson. A piece so difficult that it took months of detailed work to put together, it offers a soundscape of woodwind "colors" interwoven into complicated – but beautiful – patterns of sound. Because no full recordings of this piece currently exist, we musicians were treated to fascinating sounds we'd never heard from the woodwind quintet!
