STORY TIME

Leonard Bernstein, arr. Don Stewart — Overture to Candide

Luciano Berio — Opus Number Zoo

Nikolai Rimsky Korsakov, arr. Jonathan Russell — Scheherazade

Maurice Ravel — Ma Mère l'Oye (Mother Goose) Suite

The “Story Time” concert was inspired by a collaborative program with students from the fifth grade class at Valley View Elementary School in Great Falls, MT. Students listened to recordings of Maurice Ravel’s Mother Goose Suite and created stories and artwork depicting the their own interpretations of the music. Original stories and artwork were shared during concerts on the Great Falls Symphony’s Chamber Music Series. Other works on the program include Leonard Bernstein’s exuberant Overture to Candide, Luciano Berio’s innovative Opus Number Zoo, and Nikolai Rimsky-Korsakov’s Arabian-themed Scheherazade. For more information about how the Chinook Winds can use this program to create a collaboration between your performing arts organization and local schools see their outreach offerings here.

ALL THAT JAZZ

Valerie Coleman — Afro-Cuban Concerto for Wind Quintet
Lalo Schifrin — La Nouvelle Orleans
Elliot Carter — Concerto for Wind Quintet

Take a trip to New Orleans with the Chinook Winds’ “All That Jazz” program. This set delivers the jazzy influences of American composers, including the rumba rhythms of Valerie Coleman’s 2005 Afro-Cuban Concerto and Lalo Shifrin’s tango-tinged La Nouvelle Orleans. Elliot Carter pushes boundaries with his take on be-bop, jazz motives, and syncopated energy of the the 1940s and ’50s. Carter is considered one of America’s greatest composers, writing right up until his death at age 103.

FALL FLAVORS

Jaques Ibert — Trois pièces brèves

Adam Eason —  Measuring Cups

Paul Hindemith —  Chamber Music, Op. 24, Nr. 2

Giulio Briccialdi — Potpourri Fantastico (after "Barber of Seville" by Giacomo Rossini)

Arie Malando trans. by Norman Gonzales — Ole Guapa Tango

Kenji Bunch —  Changes of Phase

The aptly named “Fall Flavors” program includes a wide array of musical styles to delight the musical palette. A spicy tango, a potpourri of Italian tunes, and some brief and elegant French pieces are all on the menu! Kenji Bunch's Changes of Phase is a modern piece with some surprisingly familiar seasonings thrown in. The Chinook Winds also perform the Measuring Cups Etude written by Adam Eason, a new work commissioned for the quintet and performed in September, 2017. A rhythmically complex piece, it cooks up a catchy melody out of all five woodwind ingredients.

The Fall Flavors program can be adapted to any season (not just Fall!) and offers arts organizations the opportunity to partner with community food and restaurant business to create a completely flavorful experience for audiences!
